The Truth of His Unfailing Love

Lie: I will never be truly loved for who I am.

Truth:  The Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness…Exodus 34:6

Did you know that the way you were brought up, your family experience, and even church experience can have a big impact on your image of God? Especially your relationship with God?

You may not be aware of how much your perspective of God affects your experience of His love, or more specifically your ability to receive His love.

My childhood experience with a distant dad caused me to project my view of fathers onto God. I falsely assumed God thought I was only worth his time and attention if I did something really great: if I was a good girl, doing all the good things.  Even after I was in relationship with God, had surrendered to Him for a long time, and was serving in church…I always felt like I had to earn his love or work hard to stay on the team.  But that is not true. In fact, the prophet Jeremiah says “God Has loved you with an everlasting love; He has drawn you with unfailing kindness.

Can you accept that? Or is there a part of you that resists that truth?  Almost as if a wall comes up? I understand because I've been there.  I used to tune out every time someone started talking about the love of God.  I just couldn’t get it. That kind of love felt unobtainable. I was afraid to be loved by people, and by God.  I didn’t know how to trust it or receive it freely. I thought I had to work hard to earn it and keep it.

The apostle Paul prayed that we would be, being rooted and established in love.  That we would grasp how wide and long and high and deep the love of Christ is, and to know this love that surpasses our understanding—(Ephesians 3:17-19.)

God’s love isn’t something we figure out in our minds.  It goes beyond our understanding…it goes past our framework of love and our unhealthy versions of love. His love for us is unconditional. It has nothing to do with performance.  He could not love us anymore or any less than what He already does. God loves you more than you could ever comprehend. His love is boundless and unconditional. In fact, Paul says in Romans:

“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

When we believe this spiritual truth, we won’t run from Him or be compelled to strive for perfection in order to earn His love. Ladies, you are enough. You are lovable.  I pray you choose to accept the truth that our God is a loving Father, who sees you as His daughter, valued and worthy of His love.
