Seek Ye First
" But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt. 6:33
When you reflect on what’s most important to you, what comes to mind? It may be your relationships, your children and family, or maybe it's your job or school or finances? Often what is most important to us takes up the greatest space in our thoughts and ultimately determines the way we live our life. Simply put, these are our priorities.
Our priorities order the way we live day to day. The big priority question is where does Jesus rank in your life?
The Bible challenges us in Matthew 6 to first and foremost seek God and His righteousness, making Him the most important thing in our lives. Like myself, maybe you’ve heard this verse time and time again. The first time I read Matthew 6:33, I misunderstood it to mean that I’m supposed to seek God alone, sacrificing all other things that I’ve deemed important because that would be a sinful form of idolatry.
However, the longer I’ve been in relationship with the Lord and understand His heart for us, I realized I was wrong. God is saying that when we seek Him first, all of our other priorities will fall in line under Him. Jesus literally says when we seek God first, “all these things will be given to you as well.” Meaning when we make God and His plans our priority and focus, He will take care of all our needs and even the extra things we desire. We have a gracious God that truly cares about the things we care about.
I encourage you to go and read all of Matthew 6. I pray as you read you would allow Jesus’ words to soothe any worries you may feel, address the questions you have, and provide you with the peace only He can offer. We can start to put God first in our lives when we are in relationship with him - through meditating on His word, offering praise and worship, or prayer throughout your day. When we prioritize God to be first in our lives, seeking His righteousness, our lives align with His perfect will for us. What a great place to be!
