Women See Possibilities

Throughout my life I have spent a lot of time with women: older ladies, teenagers, young moms and little girls. One thing is true of us all: we see possibilities. We love to design new things, improve on the old, organize for functionality, plan parties, and just create things that make life run better. Many of us know what it is to turn some straw and a pot into a lovely table ornament, or pieces of material into an actual dress, and the joy and satisfaction that comes with it.

That’s not to say what we do is necessarily easy. In fact, because we can see many possibilities, our projects usually become bigger as we go. Think about motherhood. For 9 months, a woman carries a growing baby within and dreams of what that person will become. Even if her life has been hard (let’s face it, most are!), she sees something bigger and better for her child. Proverbs 31:27 says “she is a watchman over her house (family).”

Women watch, and see, and dream. It truly is a gift, but sometimes it can derail us. Proverbs 31:30 warns that, “Charm can be misleading, and beauty is vain and so quickly fades, but this virtuous woman lives in the wonder, awe, and fear of the Lord. She will be praised throughout eternity!”

We can glean a lot out of this verse, can’t we? It is one that gives options, but clearly points us in the best direction. We can get so caught up in both dreams and fears for the future, ones that seem so charming and beautiful—but in reality, they are distracting us from what God is trying to say.

It’s easy to get lost in the land of possibilities, good and bad. But I’ve decided to live in the wonder, awe and fear of the Lord—the land of His possibilities. What might my Jesus want to do through me as I listen to him in awe? I wonder…
